The Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has scheduled a mandatory winter tire regulation for the 2026-2027 season. The mandate is expected to run from November 15, 2026, to April 15, 2027. The regulation targets commercial vehicles involved in intercity freight and passenger transport, including buses, minibuses, midibuses, trucks, tractors, tankers, vans, and panel vans. Specific requirements dictate that driven axles on heavy vehicles must be equipped with winter tires, while all tires on vans and minibuses must meet the standards. While there is currently no nationwide mandate for private passenger cars, authorities may implement regional requirements based on local weather conditions. The policy aims to enhance traffic safety, as winter tires are considered essential for maintaining road grip in temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius. Recent updates indicate the mandatory period has been extended to five months, running from November 15 to April 15, replacing a previous window of December 1 to April 1. This extension is intended to account for seasonal weather conditions. Authorities also noted technical distinctions regarding tire types, noting that while all-season tires offer balanced performance, they may not match the braking and grip capabilities of dedicated winter tires in heavy snow or icy conditions.
