Turkey earthquake insurance regulation updates

Overview

The Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Agency (SEDDK) has introduced new regulations for Compulsory Earthquake Insurance (DASK) in Turkey, effective September 5.

Under the updated rules, when a property is transferred via sale, the existing DASK policy terminates on the date of land registry registration. The previous owner is entitled to a refund for the unused portion of the premiums, though they must manually apply for this cancellation and refund through their insurance company or agent. New owners must secure their own separate DASK policy in their own name, which land registry offices will verify during the transaction to ensure continuous coverage.

For transfers involving inheritance rather than sales, the existing policy remains valid for the new beneficiary. In these instances, the new owner must notify the insurance company of the change in interest within 15 days of discovery, after which the insurer is required to issue a policy endorsement within 24 hours.

Balkır Demirkan, General Secretary of DASK, noted that citizens should contact their insurance providers to process premium refunds based on the remaining duration of the policy from the date of the land registry transaction.
