Following the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, Turkey has engaged in large-scale reconstruction efforts involving infrastructure, schools, and historical city centers. Reports indicate construction activities are spread across 3,481 sites in 174 regions, utilizing approximately 200,000 professionals. Specific restoration projects are focused on areas such as Hatay, Malatya, Kahramanmaraş, and Adıyaman, with urban planning increasingly incorporating social investments like childcare and pedestrian paths. Minister Bak has stated that 110 billion dollars have been invested in the affected regions, resulting in the construction of 455,000 housing units. Recovery efforts also include significant support for students, with the Credit and Dormitories Institution managing 1 million dormitory beds and providing subsidized rates, scholarships, and interest-free loans to students in the region. Recent international media coverage from outlets such as USA TODAY and Business Insider has highlighted the rapid pace of these efforts across the 11 affected provinces. At peak production, construction reached a rate of approximately 550 homes per day, or 23 homes per hour. The initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, includes the ‘In-Place Transformation’ program, which assists citizens in rebuilding homes and businesses on their original land to revitalize the region’s social and economic life. Key sites noted in recent reports include Malatya İkizce, Adıyaman İndere, Hatay Dikmece, and Kahramanmaraş Altınova. Updated reports confirm that the government-led program has completed 455,357 independent housing units across the 11 provinces within approximately two years. The reconstruction aims to create disaster-resilient cities while revitalizing the economic and social life of the affected regions, which impacted approximately 14 million people.
