Turkey fraud scams against citizens

In late July 2026, Turkish law‑enforcement agencies reported two separate but thematically linked fraud cases. On 30 July, a retired banker in Yozgat Province fell victim to a phone‑based scam in which callers posing as public‑bank officials opened loans in his name, siphoning most of his monthly salary. Police arrested three suspects—including two Turkish nationals and a Syrian citizen—and the case entered the courts.

The following day, 31 July, investigators uncovered an Instagram‑based extortion ring that blackmailed a young man in Istanbul. The perpetrators used fabricated online profiles and a fake lawyer to coerce a payment of roughly 119,000 lira. Prosecutors have prepared indictments against two alleged organizers, seeking prison terms of two to eight years.

Together, the incidents illustrate a growing pattern of organized scams in Turkey that exploit telecommunication and social‑media platforms to defraud individuals and extract sizable sums.
