Turkey LGS results spark inequality debate

In late July 2026, Seydişehir Mayor Hasan Ustaoğlu honored the district’s ten highest‑scoring LGS students, while the Ministry of National Education released the 2025‑2026 LGS results and published rankings of Istanbul’s top high schools. Around the same time, Muratpaşa Municipality in Antalya offered free LGS preparation courses, producing ten students who entered the national top‑10 % bracket.

On 6 August 2026, the newly released exam data reignited discussion over fairness in Turkey’s education system. CHP deputy Yıldırım Kaya criticised the placement algorithm as “unfair and unequal,” pointing to thousands of students forced to register for distant schools and a large number of vacant slots, especially in technical and Imam Hatip institutions. Official figures showed 95.76 % of central‑allocation seats filled, leaving roughly 296,000 positions empty nationwide.

Despite the criticism, local authorities highlighted continued successes: Maltepe Municipality’s education centre achieved a 94.3 % success rate, Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi’s courses helped 328 pupils gain admission to qualified high schools, and Muratpaşa’s programme again produced ten top‑10 % performers. The Ministry’s spokesperson, Minister Yusuf Tekin, affirmed that the exam format will remain unchanged, though future questions will align more closely with the new curriculum.
