Turkey livestock population growth

Turkey has experienced significant growth in its livestock population, leading to a position that surpasses the European Union in total numbers.

Data from 2025 indicates that Turkey’s cattle population rose by 4.3% to 17,709,000, overtaking France. Turkey’s small ruminant population also saw substantial increases, with sheep numbers reaching 46,689,000—nearly four times the amount of Spain, the EU leader in that category.

By June 2026, the small ruminant population reached 60.8 million, a 5.1% increase from late 2025, driven largely by a 6% rise in sheep. While large ruminant numbers grew modestly, buffalo numbers saw a slight decline.

To support this sector, the Turkish government provides subsidies for lambs and kids, which can reach approximately 1,200 TL for young entrepreneurs. Additionally, the Turkish Central Union of Breeders of Sheep and Goats (TÜDKİYEB) has introduced formal contract models to address shepherd shortages. Despite the increase in animal numbers, retail meat prices remain high, with beef tenderloin reaching up to 1,990 TL per kilogram, posing challenges for low-income consumers.
