Turkey marine ecosystem protection project
Overview
Turkey has initiated the ‘Map-Buoy Management Systems Project’ as part of the ‘Zero Waste Blue’ project to protect Mediterranean marine ecosystems, specifically seagrass meadows. The initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, aims to prevent seabed damage caused by uncontrolled anchoring by providing fixed moorings and buoys.
In the Göcek region, the system has established infrastructure across 17 bays, utilizing hundreds of moorings and marine maps to serve hundreds of vessels. To support these efforts, a digital infrastructure called DERİA has been implemented, allowing boat owners to make digital reservations for mooring systems and waste collection services via a mobile application.
Operational maintenance in the Fethiye Gulf includes daily cleaning patrols using specialized vessels, such as the TÜÇA91 sea sweeper, and monitoring boat density to prevent excessive long-term usage of the bays.
