In July 2026 the Güran family intensified its public campaign for a new investigation. Baran Güran said the family was being mis‑portrayed and that children bearing the Güran name were barred from schools. Lawyer Levent Mazılıgüney urged the Constitutional Court to review the case and issue a violation ruling, while journalist Hilal Seven accused prosecutors and the Justice Ministry of a cover‑up. Father Arif Güran alleged that his wife was tortured for six days in a police station after the funeral and blamed the Interior and Justice ministers for obstructing justice. On 16 April 2026, after a court‑ordered vehicle stop behind the Diyarbakır courthouse, two unlicensed pistols and ammunition were seized from the car of Bahtiyar’s son Ibrahim; Ibrahim was taken into custody for illegal firearm possession, while his brother Mehmet was released pending further inquiry. The Court of Cassation reduced neighbour Nevzat Bahtiyar’s original ~~four‑year~~ four-year term and, on 16 April 2026, the Diyarbakır 8th Heavy Penal Court sentenced him to 17 years for qualified assistance to murder. The prosecutor’s office confirmed the legality of the sentence. Former HDP co‑chair Selahattin Demirtaş met Arif Güran in Edirne prison on 31 July, calling the aggravated‑life sentences of Yüksel, Enes and Salim Güran a “legal disaster” and urging an appellate review. After the meeting Baran expressed renewed hope. In early August, Salim Güran sent a public prison letter denying any involvement, insisting he was at home with witnesses on the day of the crime and reaffirming Nevzat Bahtiyar as the sole perpetrator, while thanking Demirtaş for his support. On 7 August 2026, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek noted that investigations by the newly established Unsolved Crimes Research Department had reclassified two other child deaths as homicides, specifically in Van and Afyonkarahisar.
