The anti‑corruption crackdown that began with July 2024 raids on municipal officials in Kocaeli, Antalya, Kırıkkale, Istanbul and Ankara has continued to widen. By late July 2026, İzmit Mayor Fatma Kaplan Hürriyet remained in pre‑trial detention and was formally suspended by the Interior Ministry on 24 July under constitutional and municipal‑law provisions, following a court order related to charges of organized crime, tender fraud and bribery. Testimonies from former municipal staff detailed a “bribery room,” sealed cash bags and contractor payments routed through personal accounts. The investigation’s reach extended further on 28 July when anti‑corruption prosecutors arrested T. G., the official overseeing Antalya’s Youth Center, during a vacation in Marmaris. Police seized computers, security‑camera footage, hard drives and documents from the centre, adding to earlier detentions of Antalya Mayor Muhittin Böcek and his former wife. The successive arrests across multiple municipalities underscore the sustained legal pressure on opposition‑aligned local officials. The crackdown continued on 29 July 2026 with simultaneous raids at 11 sites in Istanbul, detaining six suspects including Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş, the deputy mayor, a special‑office manager and other staff. Prosecutors allege systematic fraud in building and occupancy permits, citing the municipal subsidiary Kent A.Ş’s unauthorized permit approvals, large consultancy contracts worth about 1.078 billion lira, and alleged bribery payments passed to the mayor’s adviser. Digital material seized from the premises adds further evidence to the expanding probe. CHP leaders have repeatedly condemned the actions as political intimidation and an assault on local democracy, while demonstrations and vigils continue outside affected municipal buildings.
