Turkey continues to face significant environmental pressure from plastic waste imports. In 2025, European countries exported nearly 699,000 tons of plastic waste to Turkey, generating $193.2 million for Turkish recycling firms. Environmental studies in the Seyhan region have highlighted severe water quality issues, including extreme oxygen depletion and high chemical oxygen demand in irrigation canals, linked to microplastic discharge from recycling facilities. To address these challenges, Turkey is implementing a national strategic roadmap to manage the entire plastic lifecycle. In late August 2026, Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation and COP31 High-Level Climate Champion, represented Turkey’s environmental vision at the UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia. ~~He promoted the Zero Waste Movement, initiated by Emine Erdoğan, emphasizing its role in the circular economy and climate change mitigation.~~ On August 31, 2026, the ‘Turkey Plastic Cycle Common Intelligence Platform – Sustainable Future in the Plastic Cycle Workshop’ commenced in Istanbul. The event drew approximately 600 high-level stakeholders, including representatives from 17 ministries, local governments, academia, and the private sector. Discussions focused on six axes: waste, pollution, environment, economy, food security, and human health. A notable contribution was the ‘Muğla Model,’ presented by Muğla Governor Dr. İdris Akbıyık, which prioritizes preventing plastic from reaching sensitive coastal ecosystems over post-facto cleanup. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change designated September as ‘Zero Waste Istanbul, resulting in ~~Schools’ month. Coordinated with~~ the ~~Ministry of National Education, this program aims to foster awareness through waste separation training and recycling workshops. The workshop concluded with the~~ formation of 15 thematic working ~~groups, whose outputs will be integrated into a national action plan~~ groups to ~~promote~~ support the 2053 Turkey Plastic Vision. Expanding its international and domestic reach, the Zero Waste Foundation signed a ~~circular economy~~ cooperation protocol with London Climate Action Week on August 17 to focus on climate action and ~~reduce~~ the circular economy.
