Turkey stray animal management and feed initiatives
Overview
In Erzurum, the Provincial Animal Protection Board banned the street feeding of stray animals to prevent uncontrolled breeding and living areas. This measure includes monitoring by district municipalities, police, and gendarmerie, alongside the temporary suspension of the Pasin Ovası Municipalities Union's animal shelter until legal requirements are met.
Concurrently, Turkey is utilizing its ‘Zero Waste Project’ to repurpose food waste from public institutions, such as hospitals, prisons, and military units, into animal feed. While 74 provinces currently have the machinery to convert waste, daily production is approximately 31,274 kilograms against a capacity of over 65,000 kilograms. Authorities are working to expand these facilities to all provinces and have recommended that food items slated for destruction due to insurance or inspection protocols also be evaluated for conversion into feed.
