Turkey is experiencing a significant surge in tourism, with total overnight stays rising 11.8 percent to 181.6 million between January and August 2026. This growth is largely driven by domestic travelers, whose overnight stays increased by 22.6 percent to 78.1 million. International markets have shown mixed results: while China saw a 36 to 38.4 percent increase and Uzbekistan rose by 56.4 percent, arrivals from Kuwait fell by 45.6 percent, India by 25.8 percent, and the United Kingdom saw a 3.4 percent decline in overnight stays. To capitalize on this momentum, the Turkish government has set ambitious revenue targets, aiming for $70 billion by 2027. This goal is supported by a proposed central budget allocation of $244.5 million for the tourism sector. Data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) for the second quarter of 2026 highlights a shift in shifting domestic patterns. While the total number of trips involving at least one overnight stay fell by 3.6 percent year-on-year to 16.467 million, domestic tourism spending rose by 32.6 percent, reaching approximately 155 billion TL. The largest expenditure categories were food and beverage (31.6 percent), transportation (25 percent), and accommodation (14.5 percent). In Istanbul, the first half of 2026, domestic tourism spending saw a nominal increase of 33.1 percent to 257.3 billion TL, though a 13.6 percent decrease in total overnight stays suggests a trend toward shorter trips. In Istanbul, 12.47 million foreign visitors arrived in the city during the first eight months of 2026, average and while hotel occupancy rose to 76.56 percent in August, average room prices in August 2026 were 103.82 euros, a fell by 21 percent decrease from August 2023. However, hotel occupancy rates in Istanbul rose compared to 76.56 2023. Conversely, Erzurum reported record growth, welcoming 428,563 tourists—a 36.9 percent increase over 2025—driven largely by a 41.3 percent rise in August 2026. domestic travelers.
