In late July 2026, Turkish political figures used anniversary events in Northern Cyprus to reaffirm Turkey’s claim and security role on the island. On 21 July, politician Öztürkler marked the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 “peace operation,” declaring that Turkish Cypriots are the perpetual owners of the land and stressing Turkey’s guarantee and military presence as essential to future negotiations. Major General İlker Görgülü and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel praised the Command’s role in safeguarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, linking its legacy to the 1974 operation and pledging continued protection and capability strengthening. On 31 July, Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı issued a message for the 1 August Toplumsal Direniş Bayramı, framing the date as a key symbol of the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence. He highlighted its overlap with the founding of the Turkish Resistance Organisation, the Security Forces Command anniversary, and the 1571 Ottoman conquest of Cyprus, urging unity, solidarity and renewed national resolve. During the same commemorations, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel reiterated the three historic milestones—Ottoman conquest, TMT founding, and Security Forces Command—promising that the Turkish Cypriot community will forever protect its independence. President Tufan Erhürman, referencing the recent UN Secretary‑General visit, said the island’s situation is now “more correct” and called for the implementation of the proposed 5 + 1 talks, urging both sides to complete the necessary “homework” toward a settlement.
