Turkish apple and cabbage producers economic crisis
Overview
Apple producers across various regions of Turkey are facing a severe economic crisis characterized by rising input costs and falling purchase prices. In Isparta, deputy Hikmet Yalım Halıcı reported to the Grand National Assembly that surging costs for electricity, diesel, fertilizer, and pesticides are driving farmers toward bankruptcy. He noted a significant disparity between low producer prices and high retail market prices, calling for increased government support for exports and juice concentrate production.
As the harvest progresses, similar distress has been reported in Van and Niğde. In Van, juice factories have reportedly reduced purchase prices significantly, with some producers seeing rates drop from 30 TL per kilogram to as low as 1 TL. In Niğde, farmers stated that current sale prices are insufficient to cover basic labor and transportation expenses. High costs for fuel, storage, and chemicals have led to fears that much of the harvest may be left uncollected on trees due to lack of profitability.
In Niğde, the situation has been exacerbated by consecutive years of crop issues. Following previous frost damage, farmers are now struggling with excessive rainfall, hail, and black spot disease. These quality issues have rendered much of the harvest unsuitable for the fresh market, forcing a diversion to juice factories. Consequently, prices in Niğde have plummeted from expected levels of 9 to 12 TL per kilogram down to just 2.5 to 3 TL. Producers report that these rates fail to cover basic labor and harvesting costs, leading some to leave fruit on trees or on the ground.
