Turkish business formation and closure trends

Overview

In 2026, Turkey’s business landscape has shown diverging trends between formal company formations and small-scale enterprise stability. Data from the first eight months of the year indicated that while nationwide company formations rose by 7.4% compared to the previous year, sole proprietorships faced increasing pressure, with closures in that category rising by 9.1%. By mid-September, Republican People's Party (CHP) Niğde Deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer reported that 16,654 companies closed during the first seven months of 2026. Gürer noted that rising costs for rent, energy, personnel, transportation, taxes, and financing, alongside declining purchasing power, are placing immense pressure on small tradespeople.

Recent regional data highlights these economic strains. In the Aegean Region, new company formations fell by 9.1% in August 2026 compared to August 2025, while closures increased by 14.5%. In Izmir, 527 companies were established, while 115 closed and 180 entered liquidation. High individual debt levels are also noted in the region, with Izmir and Muğla ranking among the top cities for individual credit usage.

Localized pressures persist in Van, where 528 businesses had closed by the end of August 2026. In the automotive sector, professionals report a sharp decline in sales due to high taxes, insurance, and fuel costs. Some merchants have been forced to share single shop spaces using two different company signs to remain operational, as vehicles have lost their status as investment tools and owners struggle to cover basic operating expenses like electricity and water.
