Turkish authorities have engaged in multiple efforts to secure and recover historical artifacts. In October 2026, customs enforcement teams at the İpsala and Kapıkule border crossings in Edirne seized over 7,000 cultural items, including thousands of coins and various accessories, during two separate smuggling investigations. In November 2026, the Turkish government successfully repatriated 100 valuable artifacts from the United States. This collection, which includes Early Bronze Age items from Tokat and Tokat, terracotta panels from Burdur, and bronze masterpieces from Bubon, was returned through cooperation with U.S. institutions such as the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations. The repatriation follows investigations triggered by an attempt to sell Anatolian-origin artifacts at an American auction house earlier in the year.
