Turkish defense industry technological developments

Overview

The Turkish defense sector is advancing various unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and directed energy technologies. Companies such as Havelsan have focused on educational outreach, including robotics and coding workshops for students involving the BAHA sub-cloud UAV. In competitive settings, university students have also demonstrated AI-powered UAV capabilities with the ‘Alpagu V3’ system.

Simultaneously, there is a significant push toward laser-based defense systems. Roketsan’s ALKA Directed Energy Weapon System has been showcased for its ability to defend infrastructure against low-cost drones using electromagnetic jamming and laser technology. MKE successfully demonstrated the Tolga anti-drone system, which utilizes a 20 kW fiber laser module to engage targets at varying distances.

Integration of these technologies into major platforms is also underway. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) is developing the ANKA-III drone, intended to feature Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) systems to defend against infrared-guided missiles. Furthermore, Aselsan is prototyping the YILDIRIM-300 system for the fifth-generation KAAN fighter jet, with flight trials anticipated by the end of 2026.
