Turkey issues major sentences in earthquake and murder trials
Multiple high-profile criminal trials are progressing in Turkey, including several cases related to the February 6 earthquakes. In the Ezgi Apartment case in Kahramanmaraş, where 35 people died, the court sentenced bakery operators Sami Kervancıoğlu and Mustafa Pekel to 8 years in prison for causing death and injury through conscious negligence. They were released under judicial control. Technical supervisor Mehmet Tekin received 6 years and 8 months in prison and a 2-year professional ban, while five municipal officials received sentences ranging from 4 to 6 years. Several other defendants were acquitted.
In Malatya, legal proceedings continue for the collapse of the Kırçuval Otel, which killed 21 people. The prosecutor has requested the punishment of all defendants, citing construction and design flaws. Meanwhile, the trial for the Avşar Otel collapse, which resulted in 16 deaths, has been postponed to December 1.
Other significant rulings include the sentencing of Cemil Koç to aggravated life imprisonment and 10 years for the murder of student Ayşe Tokyaz, and the life imprisonment of Nuri Öğmen for the intentional murder of his cousin's spouse in Erzurum.
