Turkish economic and industrial challenges

Overview

Türkiye is navigating significant economic challenges driven by high inflation and rising costs for essential goods such as food, fuel, and energy. While the Central Bank has utilized high interest rates to combat inflation, the broader economic landscape remains sensitive to the resulting impacts on investment and consumption.

Industrial leaders have expressed concern regarding these pressures, specifically noting that small and medium-sized enterprises struggle to access finance as some interest rates have reached 60 percent. Additionally, Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), warned of intense competitive pressure from Chinese manufacturing, which he described as a ‘Chinese locust’ effect.

In response, economic management is moving toward a policy of ‘selective tightening.’ This strategy seeks to maintain tight monetary policy for consumers while easing credit restrictions for producers and exporters. Measures include increasing the Investment Commitment Advance Loan (YTAK) limit to 750 billion lira and raising daily rediscount credit limits to 5 billion lira to support sectors like manufacturing and tourism.
