A financial scandal involving fund manipulation and unjust enrichment has prompted significant political and legal activity in Turkey. Initially, the ruling AKP declined to form a parliamentary research commission, arguing that existing judicial and state investigations were sufficient. This decision drew criticism from opposition members, such as MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu, who questioned the presence of high-ranking AKP officials at meetings of the Fund Coordination Board. As the investigation progressed, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek reported that 85 suspects had been arrested and 220 individuals were under investigation, with various assets frozen. To assist in fund recovery, the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) established a voluntary repayment account, which has already seen some individuals return unjust gains. While Gürlek addressed rumors regarding his own leadership and allegations concerning his personal assets, he maintained that legal proceedings would continue regardless of voluntary repayments. Recent updates from Minister Gürlek confirm that authorities successfully blocked an attempt to transfer 40 million dollars abroad. Regarding the voluntary repayment process, five individuals have reportedly returned unjust gains. Gürlek clarified that while repaying twice the loss amount is considered ‘effective repentance’, it does not automatically close the investigation.
