Turkish investigation into war criminal imagery on exports

The Turkish Ministry of Trade has launched a criminal investigation and filed a formal complaint regarding socks bearing the ‘Made in Türkiye’ label that feature imagery of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić. The products were reportedly exported to Serbia.

Following reports of the items, inspectors conducted a market surveillance audit at a company in Istanbul’s Bayrampaşa district. Although the specific socks featuring Mladić were not located during the inspection, authorities seized other sock samples for laboratory testing due to identified labeling deficiencies.

A company representative stated that while they previously had commercial ties with a Serbian firm called ‘Blue Land’, they did not recognize the individual in the images and had terminated that relationship approximately 1.5 years ago upon learning Mladić’s identity.

The Ministry has initiated judicial proceedings regarding the potential ‘praising of a crime and a criminal’, emphasizing that exporters maintain a duty of care and are responsible for the imagery and expressions used on products bearing the national mark.
