Livestock production in Turkey is being supported through various government-backed projects and individual enterprises. In Erzurum, veterinarian Murat Akıncı utilized the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s ‘Kırsalda Bereket, Hayvancılığa Destek Projesi’ to establish a beef cattle production operation in the Oltu district. Expanding on such support, the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry launched the ‘Bir Suru Olsun’ (Let There Be a Herd) project to assist small-scale family livestock businesses. Through this initiative, the Meat and Milk Institution (ESK) provides pregnant meat-breed animals to eligible breeders. The program prioritizes women, young producers, and family enterprises, requiring applicants to be registered in the TÜRKVET system. In a recent iteration of the ‘Bir Suru Olsun’ project, applications were opened from November 4 to November 13, 2026. Under these terms, the ESK distributes livestock in packages containing 15 pregnant females and one breeding male. Eligible producers, who must be Turkish citizens over 18 with at least one year of TÜRKVET registration and a capacity of no more than 200 cattle, can request up to three packages. Participation requires a security deposit of 3,000 TL per animal. Priority is given to women, young producers, family businesses, and those in earthquake or fattening regions. Meanwhile, Emin Tatlıdil, the Şanlıurfa Provincial Chairman, has called for investigations into claims regarding delivery delays and quality issues in previous livestock allocations, stating that producers should not be penalized for delays beyond their control. Regional implementation continues, with the Kahramanmaraş Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry also launching the ‘Bir Sürü Olsun’ project. This local rollout follows the same application window and criteria, specifically excluding public employees and legal entities from eligibility.
