Municipalities in Turkey have introduced initiatives to support and honor elderly citizens. In Van, the ‘Tecrübe-i Hayat’ program focuses on gathering residents aged 60 and over to record personal memories and life experiences to strengthen inter-generational ties. In Konya, the Metropolitan Municipality launched the ‘Vefa Umresi’ project, which facilitates Umrah pilgrimages for retirees and veterans who have not previously visited the holy lands. Participants are selected via a notary-conducted lottery. The project, coordinated with the Presidency of Religious Affairs, involves groups traveling to Mecca and Medina to perform rituals. The second group of participants has completed their nine-day spiritual journey, spending six days in Mecca and three days in Medina. Upon their return to Konya, the pilgrims were met at the airport by families and relatives. Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay described the project as a “meaningful reflection of loyalty to elders and veterans who have made significant sacrifices for the country.” The initiative is planned has progressed to its third phase, with the Konya Metropolitan Municipality dispatching a third group of participants. This group consists of elderly citizens between the ages of 60 and 75, as well as veterans. Mayor Altay noted that the first and second groups had already completed their journeys successfully. The project aims to send groups of approximately 150 160 people to the holy lands every month, with a total of nine groups expected to participate. Applications for the program remain open through the municipality’s official website.
