The Republican People's Party (CHP) has actively sought opposition unity to protect local government control from the ruling party. Initially, CHP spokesperson Müslim Sarı called for cooperation between the YENİ Party and the DEM Party regarding the Turkey Municipalities Union (TBB) elections to reach a consensus on candidates and council members, aiming to prevent local bodies from falling under ruling party control. Following operations targeting ten opposition municipalities, the focus shifted toward solidarity in response to judicial actions. Sarı criticized the use of investigations and pretrial detention against elected officials, characterizing these processes as political tools. He emphasized that preventing municipal institutions from transitioning to the ruling People's Alliance remains a ‘red line’ for the CHP. More recently, the CHP has focused on organizational stability and strategic cooperation. In Istanbul, the party finalized its provincial management board, appointing Mehmet Ali Yüksel as Provincial Chairman. While maintaining readiness to cooperate with other factions to ensure the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) remains in opposition, Sarı reiterated that the party will not accept individuals with different political affiliations acting within the CHP’s institutional identity, warning that the party’s patience regarding political identity has limits. Sarı also stressed the necessity of unity among opposition factions to prevent the AK Party from regaining control of Istanbul, particularly if legal rulings are issued against Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. This emphasis on preventing the People's Alliance from seizing Istanbul remains a central theme in recent political discourse.
