Turkey has established itself as a significant player in the global steel market. According to the ‘World Steel in Figures 2026’ report, the country ranked as the sixth largest steel exporter globally with 17.5 million tons and the fifth largest importer with 19.8 million tons. Data regarding production shows that Turkey’s crude steel production grew by 6.8% during the first eight months of the year, totaling 26.6 million tons. This cumulative growth maintains Turkey’s position as the world’s seventh-largest producer, despite a slight year-on-year decline in August production of 0.4% to 3.4 million tons. Recent data from the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TÇÜD) indicates a geographic shift in export markets due to declining demand in the European Union, where exports fell by 22 percent during the first eight months of the year. To compensate, Turkey has seen robust growth in other regions; exports to South America surged by 67 percent to 849,000 tons, and August shipments to the United States saw a ‘massive 954.7 percent increase’ to 107,000 tons. Other growth areas for August include Egypt and Yemen. Total Turkish steel exports reached 10.3 million tons in the first eight months of the year, a 3.1 percent increase that generated 7 billion dollars in revenue. In August, export volume rose by 8.1 percent to 1.3 million tons, while the monetary value increased by 12.7 percent to 930.3 million dollars.
