Discussions regarding the profitability and output of the Turkish sugar beet industry have emerged. A farmer in Çorum, Mustafa Ertuğrul, challenged claims of unprofitability by stating that high yields can lead to significant profits per decare, noting that yields can reach up to 15 tons. He has further asserted that high yields can result in net profits of 10,000 to 25,000 lira per decare, arguing that those failing to turn a profit are due to low yields rather than market conditions. On a national scale, Ramazan Erkoyuncu, President of the Beet Growers Cooperatives Union (PANKOBİRLİK), reported that Turkey is projected to produce approximately 21 million tons of sugar beets this year. This is expected to yield 2.8 million tons of sugar. Although annual consumption is around 3 million tons, existing stocks are expected to create a supply surplus. To maintain competitiveness, producers have committed to covering costs to prevent sugar imports, aiming to facilitate exports at international prices. To support these efforts, Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı announced that 952 million lira in advance payments has been transferred to sugar beet producers. These funds are intended to help farmers cover essential costs, such as fuel, fertilizer, and labor, to ensure sustainable production.
