Following the opening of the 35th Tusványos summer university on 21 July 2026, Viktor Orbán used the event to denounce democratic backsliding, likening it to Venezuela, and warned of a “new reality”. Over the next days he framed himself as an opposition leader, calling for “resistance” against the incoming administration of Peter Magyar and later Péter Madár, presenting Fidesz as a “service centre” for freedom‑loving groups. He warned the EU could disappear within 25 years and advocated radical reforms such as abolishing the European Commission presidency. On 25 July he addressed the Trans‑Hungarian Council, echoing these themes and warning of an energy‑price crisis. The Tusványos cultural festival concluded with mixed reactions. On 26 July, still in Băile Tușnad, Orbán addressed supporters, urging reiterated a “national resistance” against what he termed the “arbitrary rule” of the new centrist Respect and Freedom (TISA) government, alleging citing alleged plans to eliminate curtail opposition, incompetence on the looming energy crisis, and pointing to recent constitutional changes limiting parliamentary terms changes, and a police seizure of Fidesz servers.
