Tuvalu national football team coaching appointment
Overview
Dutch football coach Robert Maaskant has signed a one year contract to lead the Tuvalu national team. The appointment aims to support the nation’s goal of achieving FIFA membership, which would allow Tuvalu to compete in World Cup qualifying matches.
Maaskant, who has previously managed clubs such as NAC Breda and FC Groningen, clarified that he will not receive a salary for the term, though his travel and expenses will be reimbursed. He expressed a desire to use the role to raise awareness for Tuvalu regarding climate change and rising sea levels, including plans to participate in a United Nations climate summit in Turkey.
The technical staff will include assistant coach Kew Jaliens, alongside Thijs Matla, Nabil Alefaio, and Pasene Siale. Maaskant is scheduled to begin his role in January, starting with the Four Nations Tournament in New Zealand.
