TV Globo has experienced varying success with its afternoon rerun programming, specifically within the ‘Vale a Pena Ver de Novo’ slot. While some classic productions like ‘Alma Gêmea’ have stabilized viewership, others such as ‘Cobras e Lagartos’ and ‘Paraíso Tropical’ have faced rating declines due to changing consumer habits and competition from other networks. To bolster afternoon programming, the network launched the rerun of the classic telenovela ‘Roque Santeiro’ on October 5 in the ‘Edição Especial’ slot, replacing ‘Além do Tempo’. This marks the production’s third broadcast on Brazilian open television and celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original 1985 version. The story is based on the 1963 play ‘O Berço do Herói’ and was created by Dias Gomes, with writing contributions from Aguinaldo Silva and Marcílio Moares. Set in the fictional town of Asa Branca, the plot serves as a political, religious, and social satire. It follows the legend of Roque Santeiro (originally played by José Wilker), a man believed to have died defending the town. His supposed martyrdom created a massive economic and political structure that is threatened when he unexpectedly reappears alive 20 years later. The production features iconic characters such as Sinhozinho Malta (Lima Duarte) and Viúva Porcina (Regina Duarte). The story has a notable history, including a 1975 version that was blocked by military censorship before the 1985 version became a massive cultural phenomenon. The production is also recognized for launching the careers of actors such as Claudia Raia, Patrícia Pillar, and Maurício Mattar, and featured a celebrated opening sequence by Hans Donner.
