Typhoon Saudel intensifies and approaches Philippines

Overview

Typhoon Saudel has undergone rapid intensification as it moves through the Pacific. As of August 20, the system was located approximately 950 km east-southeast of Guam. While its trajectory toward the Ryukyu Islands remained uncertain due to the strength of the Pacific high-pressure system, the storm continued to develop.

By August 22, the typhoon passed close to Agrihan in the Northern Mariana Islands, producing destructive winds of up to 177 km/h and gusts reaching 209 km/h. Residents in Alamagan, Pagan, and Agrihan were advised to seek shelter as heavy rainfall of 200–300 mm was forecast, with some areas potentially seeing accumulations exceeding 500 mm.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Saudel is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday, where it will be locally named ‘Obet’. Forecasters suggest the system may develop into a super typhoon before exiting the PAR on Tuesday. The storm is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, or ‘habagat’, potentially causing flash floods or landslides in Batanes and bringing scattered rains and thunderstorms to Luzon and Metro Manila.
