Tyson Foods beef plant closures and US cattle shortage

Tyson Foods has announced the closure of several beef processing and packaging facilities across the United States, including locations in Iowa, Utah, Washington, and Illinois. The company cited a need to restructure operations following a 15.9% decrease in beef volume and an operating loss of $138 million in its third quarter.

These closures are driven by a historic cattle shortage, with national inventories reaching a 75-year low. Contributing factors include multi-year droughts, particularly in West Texas, rising feed expenses, and disruptions to cattle imports from the Mexican border, specifically due to New World screwworm concerns. To manage the shortage, Tyson plans to shift production to facilities in Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas.

Recent industry data indicates a scarcity of cattle, with the August 1st feedlot inventory at 11.1 million head and the total beef cow count at 28.3 million head. Beyond Tyson, other industry contractions have been noted, such as the closure of Tyson’s Lexington, Nebraska, plant and JBS’s Souderton, Pennsylvania, facility.

While some agricultural economists suggest the nation maintains enough processing capacity to reroute supply without significantly impacting grocery costs, others warn that reduced capacity and a shrinking herd could lead to higher beef prices and increased transportation costs. In Illinois, the closure of the Joslin plant has prompted political criticism, with State Senator Chris Balkema arguing the move highlights a need to improve the state’s business climate and criticizing energy policies like the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA).
