Tyson Foods is scaling back its beef processing operations in response to a historic U.S. cattle shortage. The company is moving forward with plans to close its beef harvest facility in Joslin, Illinois, and its packaging site in Eagle Mountain, Utah, while seeking a buyer for its plant in Pasco, Washington. These actions follow the previous permanent closure of a large slaughterhouse in Lexington, Nebraska. The supply crunch is driven by nationwide herd inventories reaching their lowest levels in approximately 75 years. While the company previously noted that these moves could reduce annual costs by $100 million to $150 million, the financial outlook remains severe. Tyson now anticipates an operating loss in its beef segment of between $500 million and $650 million for fiscal 2026.
