UAE-Germany strategic partnership expansion

Overview

UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conducted a state visit to Germany to strengthen strategic partnerships in energy, defense, technology, and artificial intelligence. Initial discussions focused on signing dozens of agreements involving billions of euros in investments from Emirati entities such as ADNOC, Masdar, and XRG.

Following the visit, the UAE pledged an additional 40 billion euros in investments toward German sectors including digital infrastructure and energy security, with 10 billion euros specifically designated for projects in Bavaria. These investments target strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced technology, and industry.

Alongside these economic developments, the German government granted Emirates additional traffic rights to operate flights between Dubai and Berlin Brandenburg Airport. This new service is limited to a maximum of seven weekly flights and excludes fifth-freedom rights, restricting operations to routes between Germany and the UAE. This aviation decision has faced opposition from the Federal Association of German Airlines (BDF) and the Verdi union, who have criticized the move as a ‘sell-out of German jobs’ and expressed concerns regarding the impact on domestic employment and critical infrastructure.
