UAE beaches closed following major oil spill

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have closed several beaches across the northern emirates, including Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah, following a significant oil spill. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed the spill on October 23, noting that the pollution has reached the coastline and caused pungent, fuel-like odors in several areas.

The spill is linked to the tanker Gem No. 2, a 330-meter vessel flying the Panamanian flag and owned by a Taiwanese company. Researchers suggest the leak resulted from an attack on the tanker approximately two weeks ago, an incident reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) involving a projectile strike and subsequent fire. The resulting oil slick is estimated to be approximately 90 kilometers long.

Specialized teams have been deployed to conduct containment, cleaning, and remediation operations to minimize environmental impact. While residents reported strong odors, the Ministry stated that these do not pose a health risk. Authorities have urged fishermen and sea users to avoid the affected waters and follow all official safety instructions until the technical assessments are complete.
