The Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) and the Tamaulipas government have introduced a new monumental sculpture, ‘Las huellas de COVECO’, in Nuevo Laredo to promote binational cooperation and regional development through art and education. Unveiled at the Faculty of Commerce, Administration, and Social Sciences, the 4.5-meter-tall carbon steel work was created by artist Álvaro Cuevas as part of his ‘Papiro’ collection, which draws inspiration from origami. The sculpture incorporates three local fauna species—the coyote (CO), deer (VE), and roadrunner (CO)—to represent strategic thinking, human sensitivity, and agility. The artist intended the piece to promote humanism, regional identity, and vocational responsibility among the youth. A unique technical feature of the sculpture is its finish in UAT institutional colors, designed to serve as a ‘blank canvas’. This allows the university community and guest artists to periodically intervene on the work, transforming the faculty plaza into an interactive space for cultural expression and innovation. The initiative, supported by local officials and the U.S. Consul General in Nuevo Laredo, aims to expand border relations beyond trade and security by fostering cultural exchange, community trust, and professional training. In October 2026, the university further highlighted its cultural and academic presence during the Feria Tamaulipas 2026. This event showcased artistic talent from university workshops, including music, dance, and theater, alongside academic and medical advancements from faculties in Tampico.
