Ubuntu 26.10 development cycle
Overview
Canonical is progressing through the development cycle for Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed ‘Stonking Stingray’.
In the third development snapshot, Canonical integrated official Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) builds into the standard release tree to ensure synchronization with upstream updates. This release utilized Linux kernel 7.0 and GNOME 50.1, while transitioning release machinery to an automated pipeline built with Go and Temporal.
The fourth and final monthly snapshot serves as a preview for the beta phase. This iteration includes Linux kernel 7.2, GNOME 51, and Mesa 26.2 graphics drivers. A notable technical milestone in this snapshot is the completed transition to Rust-based core utilities for commands such as cp, mv, and rm. Additionally, the release introduced experimental Amd64-v3 builds and various hardware variants. While Snapshot 4 uses kernel 7.2, the final release is expected to utilize Linux 7.3.
