At UFC Vegas 123 held at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Australian prospect Tom Nolan defeated Brazilian veteran Renato Moicano via third-round TKO in the lightweight main event. The bout was marked by controversy during the second round when referee Dan Miragliotta decided to stand the fighters up while Moicano held a dominant ground position. This decision drew criticism from analysts including Joe Rogan and Big John McCarthy, who argued the intervention was unfair to the fighter in control. Moicano suggested the referee may have been influenced by crowd reactions, though he confirmed he does not intend to appeal the result. Following the controversial restart, Nolan landed a high kick and knee that stunned Moicano. In the third round, Nolan dropped Moicano with a knee before transitioning to ground-and-pound, leading the referee to halt the contest at 1:28. Nolan earned a Performance of the Night bonus, extending his winning streak to six ~~fights.~~ fights and climbing to seventh in the lightweight rankings. In the wake of the loss, the 37-year-old Moicano announced his intention to retire from professional mixed martial arts after completing his current UFC contract, which has approximately three fights remaining. He stated a desire to avoid the career decline seen by other fighters and expressed interest in pursuing influencer-style boxing, provided the compensation is significant. Following his victory, Nolan expressed interest in a matchup against Mateusz Gamrot, noting that the Polish fighter's intense wrestling style would provide a stylistic challenge compared to Moicano's methodical approach. Other notable results from the event included Jacobe Smith defeating Randy Brown, and Julian Erosa winning via first-round knockout in his retirement bout against Jeong Yeong Lee.
