UK asylum fraud investigation in London

Overview

UK authorities have launched an investigation into a suspected criminal network in London accused of assisting asylum seekers in fabricating claims. The scheme allegedly involved helping Bangladeshi men fake their sexual orientation to secure protection in the United Kingdom.

According to the Home Office, the network charged between £1,000 and £4,500 for fraudulent evidence, such as staged photographs, false letters, and fake certificates. During raids, officers seized cash, jewellery, and mobile phones. The investigation has linked these activities to Aponjon, an LGBTQ community organisation based in Whitechapel, east London.

Subsequent reports identify Aponjon founder Sajjad Miah as one of those arrested on suspicion of fraud and immigration offences. Miah has denied all wrongdoing, stating the organisation supports genuine LGBTQ asylum seekers. Officials are currently reviewing more than 100 asylum applications potentially linked to the group.
