UK data centre expansion and energy concerns

The expansion of data centres in the United Kingdom is facing increasing scrutiny regarding electricity grid capacity and environmental impact. Following the approval of a new facility at the Haslemere Heathrow Estate, the energy regulator Ofgem warned that speculative projects risk delaying essential investments in the national electricity grid. To manage a growing backlog of connection requests, Ofgem is considering new requirements such as upfront commitment fees and stricter development milestones.

Concerns have also intensified regarding the carbon footprint and energy consumption of large-scale developments. For example, the proposed £14.7 billion East Havering Data Centre Campus is estimated to emit 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, a figure the developer noted is “incompatible with the UK’s goal of achieving net zero by 2050”. Other planned sites in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire could potentially contribute over 4.5 million tonnes of annual emissions.

The scale of demand is substantial, with 315 data centres currently awaiting grid connections, representing a total demand of 73GW—nearly double the UK’s peak winter energy demand. To mitigate grid delays, some facilities may require the installation of on-site gas-fired power stations.
