UK data centre grid fee proposal

In late July 2026, Britain’s electricity regulator Ofgem opened a consultation on reforms aimed at curbing speculative data‑centre projects that were crowding the national grid’s connection queue. The regulator proposed a refundable Data Centre Commitment Fee, payable when a large data centre accepts a connection offer, with fee levels ranging from £237,500 to £712,500 per megawatt. The fee would be returned once the facility is energised and forfeited if the project leaves the queue early, and additional refundable deposits tied to development milestones could be required. Ofgem argued the measures would free scarce capacity for projects ready to build, protect consumers and improve planning confidence.

Two days later, Ofgem reiterated the proposal, emphasizing the refundable deposits and noting that the surge in connection requests had risen from 41 GW to 125 GW in a year, with data centres accounting for about 80 GW of the new demand. Energy Minister Michael Shanks voiced support, describing the scheme as necessary to modernise the connection system for 21st‑century demands. The consultation was set to run until 16 September, and Scotland was highlighted as an attractive location for new facilities because of its renewable‑energy resources.
