The National Energy System Operator (NESO) in the United Kingdom is navigating significant changes to electricity grid stability management. Initial reports indicated that NESO had successfully applied to reduce the grid’s inertia-based shock-absorbing system, proposing that ultra-fast batteries could serve as a cheaper alternative and save approximately £96 million annually. However, this shift led to increased concerns regarding frequency drops, with the risk of major disruption rising from a “one-in-27-year event to a one-in-seven-year event.” Following these developments, new regulations have come into effect granting NESO the authority to implement rapid rotating blackouts to stabilize the network during sudden supply shortages.
