UK emergency department wait time crisis
Overview
Emergency care officials in the United Kingdom are reporting significant strain on Accident and Emergency (A&E) services. In North Wales, the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board expressed concern that 24-hour waits in emergency departments are “becoming the norm,” with officials noting ambulances waiting outside hospitals.
Broadening to England, emergency care leaders have warned of a “brutal winter” as waiting times reached a four-year high. Data indicates that over 10% of patients waited more than 12 hours for admission, transfer, or discharge in a single month. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) attributed these delays to a shortage of inpatient beds and insufficient social care capacity.
Recent warnings from clinical leads in Wales and Scotland indicate that these pressures are expected to intensify. In Wales, ten out of eleven surveyed clinical leads expressed being “very or extremely concerned” about upcoming winter pressures. Dr Rob Perry, RCEM Wales vice-president, noted that departments have struggled through a difficult summer, leaving little capacity for the winter season.
In Scotland, nine in ten clinical leads reported concerns regarding winter readiness, with Dr Fiona Hunter, RCEM Scotland Vice President, stating that departments have been in a “state of crisis” throughout the year. The RCEM is calling on the Scottish Government to reduce long waits by 50% to mitigate the link between overcrowding and increased mortality rates.
