UK-EU relations and single market proposals

A proposal by former MP Nick Boles has emerged suggesting the United Kingdom could rejoin the European Union single market through the creation of a ‘European confederation’. This plan would link single market access to NATO defense commitments, requiring the UK to spend 3.5 percent of its GDP on defense and extend its nuclear deterrent protection to non-NATO allies. The proposal aims to provide access to the free-trade zone without requiring the adoption of the Euro or the restoration of freedom of movement.

Following this, the UK government has indicated a desire to deepen ties with the EU without reversing Brexit. While maintaining red lines against rejoining the customs union or restoring free movement, officials are pursuing negotiations to reduce trade barriers. Minister for European Relations Hamish Falconer has signaled a move toward proactive discussions with Brussels, focusing on services, worker mobility, and the mutual recognition of qualifications, potentially leveraging UK military capabilities to bolster continental stability in exchange for closer trade access.
