UK firework safety and injury incidents
Overview
Reports have highlighted severe, life-changing injuries sustained by teenagers in the United Kingdom due to firework accidents. In Hartlepool, 17-year-old Aleks Stasiukiewicz lost his left eye and part of his eyelid after an unexploded firework detonated in November 2024. In Paisley, 12-year-old Riley Luke lost four fingers and part of his palm following an explosion in November 2022.
Following these incidents and a recorded rise in hospital admissions, NHS England issued a safety warning. Data indicates that admissions for burns and firework-related injuries in England rose to 85 in November, compared to 60 the previous year. Total admissions for 2025 reached 161, up from 120 in the preceding 12-month period. Professor Frankie Swords, NHS medical director, noted that children often face the most severe consequences during these accidents.
