UK hate crime trends and reporting

Overview

Home Office data indicates an increase in recorded hate crimes across England and Wales for the period between April 2025 and March 2026. Total recorded offences rose by 7 per cent, with racially and religiously motivated crimes reaching their highest levels since 2012.

Specific increases were noted in religious hate crimes, which rose by 13 per cent. Within this category, offences targeting Muslims rose by 15 per cent and those targeting Jewish people increased by 10 per cent. The Community Security Trust noted that Jewish people continue to experience the highest per capita rate of religious hate crime of any faith group.

In Wales, racial hostility accounted for approximately two-thirds of the 6,157 recorded offences. Other recorded incidents included those motivated by sexual orientation and disability. In response to these trends, the Welsh Government has utilized Hate Crime Awareness Week to urge witnesses to report incidents and promote the Wales Hate Support Centre.
