UK HMRC cryptocurrency tax enforcement
Overview
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has significantly increased its scrutiny of cryptocurrency investors in the United Kingdom. During the 2025-26 financial year, the tax authority issued 81,000 warnings via ‘nudge letters’, representing a 25% increase from the approximately 65,000 letters sent the previous year and a sharp rise from the 27,714 warnings issued in 2023-24.
Official statistics for the 2024-25 tax year provide the first detailed look at cryptocurrency capital gains in the UK. The data shows that 17,600 individuals reported taxable cryptoasset gains totaling £1.38 billion, following £13.8 billion in disposal proceeds. This represents an average reported gain of approximately £78,000 per individual.
The figures highlight extreme wealth concentration: a group of 240 individuals—roughly 1.36% of reporting taxpayers—each reported more than £1 million in capital gains, accounting for £717 million of the total. Demographically, the majority of crypto taxpayers are younger than the general capital gains population, with 81% aged 54 or under and approximately 87% being male.
These warnings are intended to allow individuals to disclose unpaid taxes before formal investigations begin. Noncompliance is frequently attributed to investors misunderstanding complex regulations or incorrectly assuming that using offshore exchanges exempts them from UK obligations.
To enhance enforcement, the UK is implementing the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF). Under this international framework, cryptoasset service providers will be required to report customer information to tax authorities, a process expected to begin in 2027.
