UK-India trade relations and investment
Overview
Following the implementation of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement signed in July 2025, a major UK trade mission to Delhi and Mumbai has secured over £1 billion in new commercial deals.
Significant investments include £50 million from Meta for Data Technologies to fund AI and quantum computing research, which is expected to create 500 jobs in London and Manchester. In the aviation sector, Menzies Aviation secured a 15-year ground handling licence in Bengaluru, projected to generate £600 million in revenue. Other developments include Panakeia’s expansion in AI breast cancer diagnostics and Oxford Nanopore’s establishment of a Centre for Excellence in Hyderabad.
The trade agreement is also impacting the Scottish economy, with an expected £190 million boost. This is driven by the reduction of Indian tariffs on Scotch whisky, which are scheduled to fall from 150% to 40% over a ten-year period, alongside lower tariffs on salmon and soft drinks.
