UK mandatory e-invoicing implementation
Overview
The United Kingdom government has announced a roadmap for mandatory B2B VAT e-invoicing, scheduled to begin on 1 April 2029. Under this mandate, VAT-registered businesses will be legally required to create, exchange, and process invoices in a standardized electronic format.
In preparation for this regulatory shift, businesses are assessing accounting platforms to ensure compliance. Xero and Sage have been identified as viable options for managing transaction exceptions and data exchange. Additionally, tools such as Xero’s ‘Supplier Days to Pay Detail’ report are being used to track payment speeds, providing evidence for the government’s Fair Payment Code, which awards status levels to businesses demonstrating prompt payment to suppliers.
A technical consultation regarding e-invoicing standards, provider requirements, and exemptions is expected in Spring 2027.
