UK maintains free admission to national museums
Overview
The UK government has officially confirmed that admission to the country’s 15 national museums and galleries will remain free for all visitors, including international tourists. This decision, announced by Culture Minister Lisa Nandy during an event at Tate Liverpool, ends recent speculation regarding the introduction of entry fees for non-residents—a trend observed in other European institutions such as the Louvre.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) maintained that charging foreign visitors could discourage domestic tourism and that financial benefits would not be distributed equitably across the sector. The decision has received support from political and cultural leaders, including London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who emphasized that these institutions must remain accessible to ensure future generations can engage with collections without financial barriers.
Since the universal free admission policy was implemented in December 2001, visitor numbers have nearly doubled, rising from approximately 22.8 million in 1999 to nearly 44.7 million in the 2025/26 financial year. Data from the 2023/2024 fiscal year showed international visitors accounted for 43% of total visits. Recent 2025 figures noted the Natural History Museum hosted 7.1 million people, while the British Museum hosted 6.4 million.
To support the sector, the government has committed £600 million for national museum infrastructure projects and £760 million through the ‘Arts Everywhere’ fund.
