UK nationalises British Steel, China seeks compensation

On 16 July 2026 the UK government placed British Steel under public ownership, taking control of the Scunthorpe plant – the nation’s sole primary steelmaking facility and employer of roughly 2,700 workers. The move was justified on national‑security grounds to keep the blast furnaces operating and preserve a strategic capability unique among G7 members.

The former owner, China’s Jingye Group, which acquired the company in 2020, has demanded full compensation, asserting that the nationalisation breaches international investment rules. Jingye has signalled intent to pursue legal recourse, including arbitration under the UK‑China bilateral investment treaty.

Britain said an independent assessment will determine any payable compensation and announced that draft rules for such assessments will be released in the autumn. China’s foreign ministry warned that the handling of the case will affect Chinese investors’ confidence in the UK and pledged to monitor the dispute closely.

The controversy is expected to shape future UK‑China economic relations and may set a precedent for how strategic foreign‑owned assets are treated in the United Kingdom.
